Arizona agency expands Route 66 redevelopment program

The first two paragraphs in a story in the Kingman (Ariz.) Daily Miner contains a subtle, but important, difference, with my emphasis in bold:

KINGMAN – Kingman will host a conference to explore economic redevelopment opportunities for contaminated properties in all northern Arizona communities along historic Route 66.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, the city of Kingman, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Mohave County are sponsoring the event.

The agency started this program to clean up fuel contamination at abandoned gas stations along Route 66 in 2005, except it was in only a few select towns in eastern Arizona such as Holbrook, Winslow and Joseph City.

The fact ADEQ is expanding the program statewide is a good thing for the Route 66 corridor. If abandoned properties no longer have contamination problems, they’re much more attractive to entrepreneurs. It also suggests that the once-fledgling program is doing some good.
