A woman fell into the Arkansas River in Tulsa and was rescued Tuesday after she looked for “satanic symbols” that allegedly were on the underside of the historic 11th Street Bridge.
Several Tulsa media outlets posted the story, but KJRH-TV reported the woman’s bizarre reasoning for climbing the bridge.
She lost her footing about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday during the climb down to see the underside of the bridge and fell into the river.
KTUL-TV reported the water wasn’t too deep, fortunately, and the rescue by firefighters didn’t prove difficult.
She was hospitalized as a precaution.
None of the reports tells whether “satanic symbols” are indeed under the bridge. I’m willing to concede the possibility of graffiti of such symbols being painted on the bridge by a death-metal fan or a goth. But that’s hardly unusual. And it’s certainly not worth risking your neck to see them.
Somehow, I’m betting the consumption of alcohol was a factor in the silly stunt.
The 11th Street Bridge opened in 1915, predating U.S. 66 by more than a decade. It was closed to vehicles in 1980 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. A renovation of the bridge is tentatively on a list of long-range projects in Tulsa.

Now, had it been Route 666……………
A “silly stunt” indeed. Was that the woman, or what she did? And did she have her cell phone in one hand to take photos of what she’d hoped to find?
I think she may have added a new definition of stupid, especially at night. How was she going to see under the bridge without light?
They should send her a bill to cover the costs of the rescue at taxpayer expense.
And charge her with trespass?
