Braidwood to move historic depot

The City of Braidwood, Ill., has purchased a lot across from City Hall, where it will remove a historic railroad depot that dates to 1867, reports the Joliet Herald News.

The owner of Berkot’s Foods give the city the building with the stipulation that it be moved. The grocer needs the property cleared for more parking.

The depot’s current location is at the corner of Illinois Highway 53, which is the classic alignment of Route 66 through northern Illinois.

The city says the building will used to display historical artifacts and be used by area nonprofits.

A photo of the depot is on this Web page. The depot can also be seen the City of Braidwood’s home page.

  1. At one time that depot in Braidwood was practically rainbow colored with each board painted a different color. Glad to see that it will be taken care of now.

Sadly, Braidwood isn’t faring so well. Its ground water has been contaminated by the nuclear plant nearby and the entire town has to drink bottled water provided at the plant’s expense
