We knew this was going to happen eventually: The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department recently produced a video for Discover Oklahoma about Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on Route 66, the gift shop that opened along 11th Street (aka Route 66) in Tulsa earlier this summer.
Here’s the description of the video:
Celebrate the fun of the Mother Road with a visit to this unique retailer containing souvenirs, clothing, toys, home accessories, jewelry along with other items. While there, you need to take advantage of the photo op with the official mascot of the store, Buck Atom. He’s a fictional space cowboy created by the store’s owner. Many items such as coffee mugs and tee shirts feature Buck Atom. But you can also check out other Oklahoma gifts showcasing not only Route 66, but Bigfoot, Will Rogers and Tulsa.
The video is about two minutes:
On a related note, the owner of the shop, Mary Beth Babcock, last week announced her proposal to install a 20-foot-tall Muffler Man there was approved by the city of Tulsa:
Babcock has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help get the Muffler Man built. Here’s an artist’s rendering of the design:
She states in the campaign as soon money collected hits the 50 percent mark, construction of the Muffer Man will begin. Mark Cline of Enchanted Sculpture Studios will build it.
Creating a new Muffler Man is a big deal. Most were built during the 1960s by a fiberglass company out of California, and many have disappeared over the years.

It would be nice to see some new muffler men show up on the landscape.
