In the next day or so, you may notice a few changes to the appearance of Route 66 News. That’s because the guts of the website will be undergoing a few but crucial upgrades.
I found out a few weeks ago the main WordPress theme, or skin, of Route 66 News hasn’t been updated by its developers in two years, and none is forthcoming. Though the theme has worked well, problems slowly but surely will multiply as it becomes more antiquated. One aggravating but relatively minor problem already has surfaced in recent months.
In short, it’s time to retire the theme and get a new one.
Traffic has trended down in its usual seasonal way, and no big stories seem to be on the horizon. So I figure it’s a good time of year to do some tune-ups on the site.
Don’t worry. Route 66 News will continue to do its usual thing for the foreseeable future as it has for the last 13 years. It will just look different.
Good to hear. I look forward to the email each day.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve got another in mind, but I’ll keep yours in my back pocket.
Thirteen years! Amazing run! I find the information here always even-handed and always on topic. It is a huge achievement, Ron, the work that you have been doing for so long. It is great to have you in our Route 66 Family!
Always start my mornings with news of my favorite route. Keep up the good work !

Recently turned 73! I wish I could get a new theme but never the less, thanks for the great service you provide every day. Have a Merry Christmas and a healthy prosperus new Year
Changes or not, Route 66 News is the best and most-frequently updated site on this subject. Not to mention, well written. I read it daily.. Thanks, Ron!
Thanks for all you do
Close your fingers and cross your eyes and hope you don’t get a big surprise. Good luck with the changes, and I hope they’re not too “buggy.” I await your new look with baited breath.
Still great after all these years. Keep up the good work.
Perhaps these changes explain why Google Chrome won’t let me on the site.
If it’s bookmarked, you may need to update it. I also added HTTPS to it to make it more secure.
