Burnett’s Flowers in Tulsa became Tulsa Route 66’s first new neon sign installation in 2020 after the business received a neon sign grant from the city.
The Tulsa Route 66 Commission stated in a Facebook post the flower shop recently moved near 11th Street (aka Route 66) and Quincy Avenue, but it’s been in business in Tulsa since 1935.
Rhys Martin, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, also posted a close-up image of the Burnett’s Flowers neon sign:
More about the city’s Route 66 neon-sign grant program may be found here. I think the number of neon signs in Tulsa that are new or restored through the program is about eight, with more coming.
The Tulsa World reported nearly three years ago that Jerry Smith, only the third owner of the flower shop, sold the business to Jerry Yocum of Wichita, Kansas. Yocum said he was bringing wholesale prices and more coolers to keep the flowers fresher for a longer period.
Yocum said he’s also glad that he gets to help keep an established business along Route 66 alive.
“On Route 66, it’s a different area of town. … We’re going to have to be more of a destination place,” Yocum said.
