The year isn’t close to being over, but two people are already planning on personal expeditions on Route 66 in 2009.
Megan Carter is planning on going from Lawton, Okla., to Chicago by horseback, which is about 1,000 miles. She and her ride will latch on to Route 66 at Chandler, Okla. The trip starts June 23. Her expedition is being supported by the Long Riders Guild, and money generated will be given to a mental health center at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Carter is hoping to stay in a few homes along the way to help defray costs. You can contact her on her Web site if you want to help.
Norberto De Angelis is planning on doing the entire length of Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica in a special hand bicycle. The Italian Route 66 Association is helping sponsor his trek. De Angelis was a football player who was paralyzed in a car accident, and is using the hand bike as part of his rehabilitation.
De Angelis’ trip begins in Chicago in late April. If you wish to sponsor or contribute to his effort, go here. His official brochure is here.
