The City of Tulsa is hosting a “Lights-On Event” on Tuesday at the Route 66 Avery Plaza West neon-sign park at the southwest end of the historic 11th Street Bridge.
The switch will be thrown at 7 p.m. on three replicas of historic Route 66 neon signs – Will Rogers Motor Court, Tulsa Auto Court and Oil Capital Motel. Each sign features animated movement.
Tulsa’s mayor, other officials and the designer will speak at the ceremony.
Here’s a photo from a few weeks ago when the signs were installed at the park:
City officials are asking those who attend to practice social distancing and wear a mask due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The neon-sign park was announced two years ago. The Tulsa Route 66 Commission stated it wanted those three signs to represent east Tulsa, west Tulsa and the Admiral Place sections of Route 66. The Will Rogers Motor Court sat on Tulsa’s east side, the Oil Capital Motel stood on the west side, and the Tulsa Auto Court operated on Admiral Place.
The project was funded with Vision 2025 sales-tax funds that were approved by voters in 2003. It is the last remaining Vision 2025 project for Route 66 in Tulsa County.
