The city of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, is planning a downtown Alley District designed for pedestrians off Route 66 and also a Route 66 Rock Creek Park near the historic bridge.
According to an earlier story by the Sapulpa Times, a downtown alley between Dewey, Lee and Hobson streets would be converted into a new pedestrian and commercial area. Lighting and landscaping improvements will create attractive spaces for dining, shopping, and conversation.
KJRH-TV in nearby Tulsa spoke to David Reed of Reed Architecture about the project:
Reed says outside businesses are eager to set-up up shop. For now, the district will include a new brewery, restaurant and wine bar with major lighting and landscaping improvements. It will also include a family-friendly park featuring a playground and outdoor theater.
A major draw will be Sapulpa’s history and placement on Route 66. Some of these buildings date back more than 100 years. The goal is to re-purpose the buildings while also keeping their structural integrity. […]
The first phase of the project will be the alley on the north side of Route 66. They expect that to be finished by the end of October. The second phase will begin next January.
That project will be paid for with a voter-approved bond vote. It’s part of the city’s master plan.
The Sapulpa Times also reported Reed wants to build a playground and rest stop connecting Route 66’s historic Rock Creek Bridge on the city’s west side, the soon-to-reopen TeePee Drive-In theater and a prominent Route 66 mural on a city water tank.
