The Sunset Motel, known for its location on Route 66 in Villa Ridge, Missouri, and its vibrant neon sign, recently was put up for sale for $1.1 million.
Coldwell Banker Realty is the broker for the property. Here’s what it stated in the description:
The Business of Success. Make it yours with this strategically located commercial property in Villa Ridge, MO off Historic Route 66! The Sunset Motel has a total of 16 units, including a train caboose! The three units in the blue building are currently leased at $550/month each. Land is mostly wooded with a large field in front of the main building and a nice area with mature perfect for a picnic area behind the main building. This 17.5+/- acres has two tax ids (18-6-130-0-000-03100 & 18-6-140-06200). Owner may divide! Owner says bring all offers! Call today for more information!
The listing claims the motel opened in 1975, but that is incorrect.
Joe Sonderman’s 66Postcards website states it opened in 1945, and its architecture and a vintage postcard posted of the property support that contention.
The motel’s neon sign was restored in 2009 with the help of a cost-share grant from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.
At the time, the motel’s owners said they planned to reopen four of its rooms to Route 66 travelers, but I’m unaware they ever did.

Seems like a lot. It’s nice land, but not that close to Saint Louis and I’m unsure about it’s income potential.
That’s overly optimistic.
