A local artist recently completed a 722-square-foot, Route 66-themed mural on the side of the Tulsa Welding School along the East 11th Street alignment of Route 66.
Sarah Thompson finished the mural earlier this month. It features Tulsa landmarks such as the Meadow Gold sign, Desert Hills Motel and the Oasis Motel.
According to Yahoo! News:
“To me, it’s spotlighting how Tulsa is thriving. Tulsa Welding School is part of the historic Route 66, and it’s beautifying that and making it known,” said Thompson. […]
Dr. Shalisa Powell is the Campus President of the Tulsa Welding School. She spoke about the importance of the mural.
“We hope that our students are inspired by the mural, that it represents welders, represents the skilled trade industries and people who build the infrastructure of the country, so these are important work for us and we just wanted to honor them in this way.”
Tulsa Welding School, which was founded in 1949, is at 2545 E. 11th St. in Tulsa (map here).
Two years ago, the school took part in the city’s Route 66 neon sign grant program to create a new, vibrant sign.
