An artist is painting a mural inside the Galena Mining and History Museum in Galena, Kansas, and anticipates finishing it in about 10 days.
According to KSNF-TV and museum director Linda Phipps, Sandra Pemberton’s mural will depict Galena’s railroad, mining and Route 66 history.
Here’s what Phipps said inspired the mural:
“I was visiting my son, in Elko, Nevada, and Elko has a lot of murals there. One in particular really struck me and struck my heart, it was a train looking like it was bursting through a wall with smoke and I just thought that that would be something, with our train depot, that would fit very nicely here,” said Phipps.
Pemberton runs Sandra Dawn Fine Art in nearby Neosho, Missouri, and has painted a mural in downtown Joplin.
The Galena Mining and Historical Museum, housed in a century-old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad depot moved from another spot in town, has sat along Route 66 on the city’s west side for almost 40 years. It contains a lot of artifacts from Galena’s fascinating and sometimes-tumultuous history.
The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
