The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration announced last week it was giving a $1 million grant to boost bicycle safety along a short stretch of Route 66 from Edmond to Arcadia, Oklahoma.
It was part of $21.8 million in grants for 33 National Scenic Byways Program projects, according to a news release from the FHA.
According to an abstract on the project:
This project will add 8-foot outside shoulders to approximately 1.3 miles of the Historic Route 66 National Scenic Byway and newly designated U.S. Bicycle Route 66 in Oklahoma County. This project will improve safety and enhance cycling opportunities along the corridor from Post Road to just west of the town of Arcadia, allowing the abutting communities, Edmond and Arcadia, to enjoy features such as POPS 66 Soda Ranch, the Historic Arcadia Round Barn, Lake Arcadia, and the Route 66 Softball Complex.
“FHWA is proud to award these grants that will help make travel safer, provide more enjoyable access, and support local businesses along scenic byways across the country,” FHA Administrator Shailen Bhatt said. “Scenic routes provide myriad ways to explore the United States, and it’s no wonder that since its inception in 1992, the National Scenic Byways Program has received broad support from Members of Congress, State and local officials, and the public.”
