Buc-ee’s opens in Amarillo, the second location near Route 66 corridor

A new Buc-ee’s convenience store opened Monday on the east side of Amarillo, Texas — the 66th location in the Texas-based chain and the second near the Route 66 corridor.

The first Buc-ee’s along Route 66 opened in December 2023 in Springfield, Missouri.

The opening ceremony included George Strait’s classic song “Amarillo by Morning” being played over the public address system during the opening ceremony. The store also handed out free treats to first responders.

The Amarillo Globe-News reported the new Buc-ee’s in Amarillo is the westernmost location except for a store in Colorado.

The new Amarillo location spans 74,000 square feet and features 108 fuel pumps, including 24 EV charging stations, catering to the growing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure. This state-of-the-art facility not only provides ample fueling options but also ensures that modern travelers have access to sustainable energy solutions. As with all Buc-ee’s locations, the store offers a variety of food options, including Texas BBQ, homemade fudge, kolaches, Beaver Nuggets, jerky, and fresh pastries. […]

Arch “Beaver” Aplin, the owner and founder of Buc-ee’s, shared the heartfelt origins of the brand during the Amarillo store’s opening festivities. “The name Buc-ee’s comes from my childhood nickname, combining it with my Labrador Retriever’s name, Buck, and the charm of Ipana toothpaste’s animated mascot, Bucky the Beaver,” Aplin explained. “We’ve cherished what Buc-ee’s represents over the years, and we’re thrilled to bring that unique experience to Amarillo.”

Aplin further emphasized the company’s dedication to community engagement and quality service. “Our goal has always been to create a destination where travelers can feel at home, enjoy top-notch amenities, and explore a wide variety of products. Amarillo is a key location for us because of its vibrant community and strategic position on the I-40 corridor.” He also hinted at future plans, stating, “We’re looking forward to introducing new services and expanding our product lines to better serve the Amarillo community and travelers passing through.”

Aplin added that the Amarillo Buc-ee’s will offer locally inspired food options.

Amarillo Mayor Cole Stanley said he expected the new Buc-ee’s to create over 200 jobs and millions of dollars in local sales.

It is at 9900 E. Interstate 40 Highway, at the Juett Attebury Road exit.
