Drive-through Route 66 shield in Galena is nearly finished

A large, drive-through Route 66 shield in Galena, Kansas, has been largely completed. Painting on the structure should be finished by this week.

According to a recent story by KSNF-TV in nearby Joplin, Missouri, artists Sandra Dawn and David Mason have been painting the shield.

They’re painting a scene that embodies the state of Kansas on the shield, including sunflowers and the original tow truck that inspired the “Tow-Mater” character from the movie Cars.

The other side will remain blank, with the intention of eventually projecting images onto it throughout the year.

The shield is on Front Street, which is the older alignment of Route 66.

The big shield is reminiscent of other drive-through ones in Grants, New Mexico, and Kingman, Arizona.
