Laurel Kane of Afton Station and other roadies are trying to raise money to buy and erect a monument at the south end of the fabled Sidewalk Highway of Route 66 north of Afton, Okla.
Kane provides the details on her Thoughts from a Route 66 Business Owner blog:
The $3920 cost of the installation has been reduced by $1060 by David, my ex, offering to pick up the
monument in western Oklahoma, deliver it to the site, and “plant” it in cement there. The county is going to be asked to provide a small pull-off area near the monument, and if we sweet-talk them enough, maybe a fence around it. But that still leaves $2860 we will owe the company. So far, at least $1000 of that has been donated, but we will now officially start a “$66 for 66” campaign. We will take all donations of any size,
but the “66” is a catchy way of starting the campaign. We would like to get the full amount as soon as possible.
If anyone is interested in donating to this cause, please send checks to:Oklahoma Route 66 AssociationP.O. Box 446Chandler, OK 74834
The marker is similar to other ones planted around western Oklahoma. To better see the inscription that’s proposed, click on the thumbnail illustration.
The Sidewalk Highway is so named because it’s only nine feet wide. Believe it or not, such a narrow roadway wasn’t that unusual for that era. It was built in 1922, several years before Route 66 was designated. It extends into the south edge of Miami, Okla.
There is a marker coming… A historical marker will be placed at Ribbon Road soon. Miami has secured a grant for the marker as part of a scenic byway grant that was awarded in 2007.
Thank you! We’re excited about finally getting recognition for this extremely historic segment of Route 66.
I’ve put this on my Twitter stream at @markeroni. Good luck!
