Roadkill follies

Another video from Australian morning TV host Grant Denyer during his current Route 66 trip. I have to admit this is pretty funny. More of those videos can be seen here.

A look inside Keepers of the Wild

Take a look at a good video by AAA Highroads magazine about the animals inside Keepers of the Wild animal sanctuary, on Route 66 north of Kingman, Ariz. The park contains more than 175 exotic animals, many of which would have been destroyed if it were not for Jonathan Kraft's facility. And Keepers of the … Continue reading A look inside Keepers of the Wild

A word from our sponsor …

This is about the only television advertisement in recent weeks that's caused me to smile. Of course, Hank Williams and old trucks will do that.

A chat with Rich Henry

A couple of very young journalists talk to Rich Henry of Henry's Rabbit Ranch in Staunton, Ill. Big Red is the name of the new pet rabbit that greets tourists in Rich's office.

And they call the thing rodeo

Though I've lived in Oklahoma more than six years, for the first time I attended the annual Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita. Will Rogers, who grew up near Vinita and attended college there, promised townsfolk in 1934 he would return to Vinita if they put together a rodeo. Oatman gets kicks from its burros

Chris Epting of AOL News has a dynamite headline that accompanies his story about the Route 66 town of Oatman, Ariz. -- "Oatman: A Town That Rose from its Asses." Although the town boasts re-enacted gunfights, keeps an Old West flavor, and preserved the hotel where Carole Lombard and Clark Gable honeymooned in 1939, Epting … Continue reading Oatman gets kicks from its burros

Notes from the road

The Fanning 66  Outpost in the Route 66 hamlet of Fanning, Mo., is hosting its annual Picture in the Rocker Day on Aug. 7, where you can enjoy the rare opportunity of sitting (or standing) on the World's Largest Rocking Chair. The Viva Cuba blog had some of the details: The Outpost charges $5.00 per … Continue reading Notes from the road

Notes from the road

It wasn't a pleasant afternoon or evening in the St. Louis region for Route 66 travelers -- or for any travelers, for that matter. Two to four inches of rain fell in a short time Wednesday afternoon, causing flash flooding in low-lying areas, according to various media reports. That included several feet of water at … Continue reading Notes from the road

RFD-TV buys Roy Rogers’ horse, dog at auction

Cable television channel RFD-TV gave thought about purchasing all of the memorabilia from the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans museum when its contents were put on the auction block a few days ago. Instead, it bought the next-best thing. RFD-TV president Patrick Gottsch purchased the movie cowboy's beloved horse, Trigger, for $266,500. After Trigger died … Continue reading RFD-TV buys Roy Rogers’ horse, dog at auction
