Dean Walker, a Kansas Route 66 advocate and one of the inspirations for Mater in last summer’s animated movie “Cars,” will appear on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Wednesday.

Prominent Route 66 author Michael Wallis, who’s known Walker for years, said that Walker will do his turning-his-feet-backwards trick during an audience segment for the show.

Walker has been doing this physical oddity for Route 66 travelers for years. It doesn’t look none too comfortable, either.

Walker can turn his feet completely backwards only with the help of a “kicker” like Wallis to kick them into place. Incidentally, Wallis will be unavailable as a kicker, as he’s on his Lincoln Highway book tour.

Wallis said someone on the show will be a “designated kicker” instead.

Wallis also told me that Walker is excited about appearing on national TV. “The Tonight Show” airs at 10:35 p.m. CST.
