This jam session during a version of Bobby Troup’s “Route 66″ is smoking hot. You’ve got Doc Alters on harmonica, Renee Manning on vocals, Earl McIntyre on trombone, Steve Simon on clarinet, and a few members of the Fabulous Thunderbirds as the rhythm section.
It’s definitely got a Crescent City feel.
thanks Ron that was videod on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise Jan. 2009 my band is thinking about doing the Route 66 road trip and want to know about getting some gigs to play on the route any ideas?
Doc, among the venues I can think of offhand are the Rose Bowl Events Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in Tulsa, Coleman Theatre in Miami, Okla.; El Rey Theatre in Albuquerque, Natatorium in Amarillo; and Del Rhea’s Chicken Basket in Willowbrook, Ill.
For a thrill, I’d also recommend the Elbow Inn in Devil’s Elbow, Mo., and the Sandhills Curiosity Shoppe in Erick, Okla. The former is a barbecue joint and biker bar on an older alignment of Route 66 that has live music a few days a week; the latter is a loosely run entertainment venue run by Harley and Annabelle Russell. Harley is a former professional guitarist, and he’s hosted fun jam sessions with professional musicians in the past if you make arrangements with him in advance.
