Whatever happened to Susan Croce Kelly?

Remember Susan Croce Kelly? She’s the one who co-wrote, with photographer Quinta Scott, the excellent “Route 66: The Highway and Its People” in 1988, one of the first books about the Mother Road after the highway was decommissioned. It predates Michael Wallis’ bestselling “Route 66: The Mother Road.”

Well, Susan Croce Kelly got married and is now Susan Kirkpatrick, and she’s editor of Ozarks Magazine. The Webster-Kirkwood Times in Missouri caught up with her. And the Mother Road played a crucial role in her current occupation:

Of course, there are lots of good things and good people in the Ozarks, especially along Old Route 66. Writer Kirkpatrick and photographer Quinta Scott found that out in a big way when they published the book, “Route 66,” which has sold more than 55,000 copies since it debuted in 1988.

Kirkpatrick said research for the book was another factor in her dream to transplant to the Ozarks from an urban, corporate environment. And, of course, the Ozarks Magazine – now published six times a year – was a big part of that dream.

“The magazine has been a lifelong dream. When I figured out I couldn’t buy a magazine in the Ozarks, we just had to start one here,” said editor Kirkpatrick, referring to herself and husband, Joel.
