Webb City’s loss may be Route 66’s gain

Webb City, Mo., has decided to pull the plug on its annual Mining Days after 29 years, reports the Joplin Globe. It usually was held in the last week of September.

However:

In its place, the city wants to put on a series of other annual festivals with different themes in the downtown area, including a Route 66 event. […]

Biggs said the first of these new events will probably be scheduled for April 2009.

The idea of a Route 66 event is tied to the Drury students’ vision for Webb City. They recommended turning the old gas station at the corner of Main Street and Route 66 into a welcome center with information about the historic road.

Officials cited declining volunteerism, plus moving it to a less-visible spot in a city park, as reasons for Mining Days’ demise. City officials say they want the new festivals to be in downtown instead.
